Top 10 things to do in Karamoja Sub-Region in Uganda

The Karamoja subregion is located in the northeastern part of Uganda.The Karamojong are an ethnic community and indigenous residents of comprises Kotido, Kaabong, Karenga, Nabilatuk, Abim, Moroto, Napak and Nakapiripirit districts of northeastern Uganda.

1. Hiking and Trekking

Hiking is a great way to get out of the city and enjoy nature. There are many trails that are easy to access in the various parts of Karamoja. Specifically Mount Napak, Mount Kadam and Mount Moroto. You get amazing views of the landscape and an awesome experience.

2. Game Drive in Kidepo Valley National Park

The Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Uganda. You will get to experience the vast, open plains of Uganda and see the stunning Uganda’s wildlife. Seeing the wild animals in their natural habitat is one of the most amazing experiences ever. The game drive is also a good chance for you to learn about Uganda’s wildlife in Kidepo.

3. Camping in Kidepo

Camping is a fun way to spend the day with family and friends. It also allows you to learn more about the outdoors and what it has to offer.If you have never camped before, there are many things you should know before you go on your first trip. First, make sure you have all of the necessary gear, such as tents, sleeping bags, food, and water. However if you use tour operators the necessary items will be provided in your tour package. Campsites in Kidepo valley National park include: kakin campsite, Kidepo UWA Campsite, etc

4. Tepeth Cultural Experience

The Tepeth is one of the hidden tribes of Uganda. These groups of People live in the Mount Moroto area-the highest Mountain in the Karamoja region. Their language is called SOO which is slightly different from Karimojong . While here you get to experience their way of life, cultural experience and their spiritual beliefs. 5. Local Market Tour

It is always a good thing to explore a local market while in a new town or city. We went on a local market tour in Moroto town. The tour started out with a visit to the small old market. We learned about the different kinds of items that are available in the area, local remedies for flu, and locally made clothing which is most commonly worn in the region. Although most of our tours were in the Old market, The Government of Uganda has constructed a large Central market in Moroto town. This market was not yet commissioned during our time of visit.

6. Karamoja Traditional village Experience

Imagine waking up in a traditional Karimojong village where the villagers are welcoming you with smiles and warm traditional dances. You have just arrived, and you can feel the energy of the people buzzing in the air. Well this welcome changed my whole perspective about the Karimojong. In the village experience, you get a chance to see how they offer animal sacrifices to the gods, how they hunt and how they live their life.

7. Karimojong Women Cultural Life

Karimojong women are very proud of their culture. They have a rich and diverse culture, which is rich in history, music, dance, and art. They wear outfits and beads that have different meanings and significance. In the Women Life cultural tour, You also get a chance to experience their way of life, the day to day tools they use and their roles in the community as women.

8. Nature & Cultural Photography

A photographer’s eye is drawn to the beauty of nature. They see the world with a sense of wonder, a sense that makes them want to capture it on film. In the case of photography, you may find that you have a particular interest in animals, landscapes, people and cultures. Whatever your interest, Karamoja offers you many ways to explore its culture, landscapes and nature.

9. Bird Watching in Karamoja

I love watching birds. I love the way they fly and the way their feathers look when the sun is shining on them. Birds are one of my favorite things to watch and I often find myself sitting outside just watching them fly by. You could go bird watching in Kidepo Valley national park and some of the birds you will find are: Ostrich, sun birds, chest nut sparrows, dusky turtle dove, karamoja apalis, which is one of the rare birds among many other birds.

10. Night Life Experience

While many people enjoy visiting their favorite night club, others prefer the solitude of a more laid-back nightlife experience. If you’re looking for a nightlife experience that’s a little more low-key, then consider spending a night on the town in one of the many Karimojong towns like Moroto.
